Abstract

PURPOSE:To diminish the generation of cracks, and increase the life of a metal halide lamp, by restricting to given values the diameter of the electrode axis of the lamp whose sealing part has a circular cross section, and length of buried parts of the same axis. CONSTITUTION:The ends of a bulb 2 made of quartz glass is heated and softened, and a gradual fusion of each end of the quartz glass is effected by taking advantage of the pressure difference, thus a sealing part 3 having a circular cross section being formed. A metal-foil conductor 4 made of Mo or the like, which is connected to an electrode axis 6, is fitted within the sealing part 3. Here, the outer diameter, dmm., of the electrode axis 6 should be 0.7<=d<=2.0, and the length, lmm., of the buried part of the electrode axis inside the sealing part 3 should be d<2>+4<=l<=5d+4. Through the means mentioned above, the generation of cracks is diminished, and the life of the lamp can be lengthened.
