Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture sodium silicate having a high molar ratio with small consumption of energy by heating silicic acid coated with an alkali-contg. substance as starting materials so as to react them and separating the foamy reaction product from the high temp. zone before it is vitrified.
CONSTITUTION: Silicic acid (b) coated with an alkali-contg. substance (a) such as sodium metasilicate is charged into a reactor 1 as starting materials 8, and a heat source 3 is worked to heat the inside of the container 1 to a high temp. The materials 8 react continuously, and the white, foamy, viscous and fluidized reaction product 9 contg. many microbubbles drops from the reaction plates 4 owing to the empty weight. The dropped product 9 is separated from the high temp. zone through the outlet 2 and enters a dissolving vessel 6 filled with water or sodium silicate. In the vessel 6 the bubbles are released, and the product 9 is powdered and dissolved. By this method sodium silicate having ≤about 3 molar ratio of silicic acid/alkali can be manufactured easily.
