Abstract
Process for producing high puritysolar grade silicon be reaction (12) of silicon tetrafluoride with sodium which is carried out inside a powder lined reaction container (76) enclosed within a reactor (42). The powder is selected from at least one fluoride or silicate of alkali or alkaline earth metals or an oxide of silicon or a powder of reaction products (78) the powder liner (76) forming the container being capable of withstanding heating below themelting point of sodium fluoride without sintering or melting. The powder liner (76) forming the container is made sufficiently thick to provide a thermal barrier, prevent bonding or adhesion of the reaction products to the support substrate thereby providing easy release of the reaction products (78).
