Abstract

PURPOSE: To oxidize the surface of metallic magnetic powder safely and to provide high corrosion resistance by suspending the metallic magnetic powder in an org. solvent having no acidic groups and blowing a gas contg. at least steam into this suspension.
CONSTITUTION: Organic solvent contg. no acidic groups such as carboxy groups, sulfonic acid groups, and nitrate groups, for example, toluene, xylene, etc. are used for suspension and the amt. thereof is about 3W20 times of the weight of the metallic powder. The gas to be blown is an inert gas contg. 0.1W10vol% steam and the content of oxygen is about 1vol%. The flow rate of the gas contg. steam is about 1W200l/min/kg of Fe powder and the reaction temp. is preferably about 50W200°C for applications of magnetic powder for ordinary magnetic tapes. Thereby, the danger of explosion and combustin of the org. solvent are eliminated at all.
