Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the title friction material having an appropriate friction coefficient and good wear resistance, by blending a vegetable fiber and/or an org. synthetic fiber with an inorg. fiber other than asbestos, and incorporating a friction modifier, an inorg-matter, metallic powder and a binder into the mixture. CONSTITUTION:As a heat-resistant fiber an inorg. fiber such as potassium titanate fiber, glass fiber or ceramic fiber other than asbestos is used. The title friction material which does not contain asbestos at all, is obtd. by blending a vegetable fiber such as wood pulp and/or an org. synthetic fiber such as polyester fiber or a PVA-modified fiber with the inorg. fiber, and further incorporating a friction modifier such as rubber powder, an inorg. matter such as TiO2 or kaolin, metallic powder such as Cu, Zn or Al powder and a binder such as a thermosetting phenolic or epoxy resin, into the mixture.
