Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a brake lining material having excellent frictional properties, by binding acrylic flameproofing fiber with a binder. CONSTITUTION:Acrylic flameproofing fiber containing >=5% of bonded oxygen, is bound with a binder selected from phenolic resins, epoxy resins, polyimide resins, rubbers, etc. The composition may contain an agent for improving brake characteristics, e.g. metal powders, inorganic powders, etc., and the acrylic flameproofing fiber may be blended with asbestos fiber, glass fiber, carbon fiber, metal fiber, etc. The flameproofing fiber can be manufactured by heating an acrylic fiber containing >=85wt% of acrylonitrile in an oxidative atmosphere, e.g. in air, at 200-400 deg.C. When the oxygen content of the flameproofing fiber is less than 5%, the flameproofing characteristics are not so high as to satisfy the requirement for the brake lining material.
