Abstract

PURPOSE: The title material, usable for an automobile brake, having improved friction characteristics, and comprising a combination of cast iron powder, inorganic filler, etc., bonded with a phenolic resin as a binder and a carbon fiber as a reinforcing base in a specific proportion.
CONSTITUTION: An organic friction material comprising (A) 10W30vol% a phenolic resin as a binder (B) 30W70vol% a carbon fiber, preferably a chopped one having an average fiber length of 0.2W10mm, (C) 3W20vol% cast iron powder preferably having a particle size ≤60 mesh with a carbon content of 2.5W4.5%, and (D) 3W30vol% an inorganic or organic filler, preferably comprising a half or more barium sulfate. The total amount of (B) and (C) is 45W80vol%, and the volume ratio of (B)+(C) to (A) is 2.4W4.2:1.
EFFECT: A stable material having a high coefficient of friction even under severe conditions and improved adrasion resistance.
