Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a friction material having excellent frictional characteristics, heat resistance and abrasion resistance, by impregnating a paper-like substrate containing aromatic polyamide fiber, a binder and a frictional characteristic improving agent, with a phenolic resin, and hot-pressing the impregnated substrate. CONSTITUTION:A paper-like substrate containing 5-70 wt% of aromatic polyamide fiber, a binder and a frictional characteristic improving agent such as CaCO3, BaSO4, SiO2, etc. is impregnated with a phenolic resin, and hot-pressed to a desired form to obtain a fiber-based friction material. When the content of the polyamide fiber is less than 5%, the heat resistance and the abrasion resistance connot be improved; and when it exceeds 70%, the frictional characteristics become poor.
