PURPOSE:To reduce the residual image of a photoconductive image pickup tube, to enable a high target voltage to be applied, and thereby enhance the resolution by forming a lead metal layer and a lead oxide layer over a beryllium metal base plate, in that order, to make a target. CONSTITUTION:A photoconductive image pickup tube for X-ray images has a cylindrical sealed case 4 with a bottom, and a target 2. After a lead metal layer 21 is formed on a beryllium metal plate 23, a tetragonal lead oxide layer 22 is made to grow on the top of the layer 21 upward, thus the target 2 is prepared. The layer 21 is preferred to have a thickness of 0.2-1mu. The thickness of the layer 22 is about 20mu.
