Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain steel bars and steel wires of superior relaxation characteristics and absorption energy at the impact tensile breakdown by quenching the steel wire to a hardened structure and warm working martensite under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A steel wire of ≤0.5% content of C is heated to temps. above the Ac3 point and is quenched at above the critical cooling rate to a hardened structure. This steel wire is heated to 100W700°C, and is subjected to plastic or straightening working of 3W90% strain rates at these temp. regions, whereby a high tensile wire is obtained. Here, relaxation is markedly decreased by the plastic or straightening working, and the increase in mobile dislocation degradating these is suppressed. To this end, the working temp. is required to be above the lower limit, but in excess of the upper limit, the effect and strength decrease. If the content of C exceeds 0.5%, the warm working of martensite is difficult. With the strain rates below the lower limit, the decrease in relaxation is not realized, and above the upper limit, the working is difficult.
