Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a nonrefined high tension bolt of high strength, high toughness and a long tool life by subjecting steel of specific composition to a constant temp. transformation treatment then cold drawing and cold forging thereby forming the bolt.
CONSTITUTION: After steel of 0.15W0.3% C and 1W2% Mn is heated to above the Ac3 transformation point (if necessary, it is cold-drawn at about ≤40% reduction of area), after which it is subjected to constant temp. transformation at 450W580°C. After cooling, it is cold-drawn at ≤40% reduction of area, whereby a bolt is formed. Here, the C is required above the lower limit in order to increase the strength and above the upper limit, toughness is lowered, and cold forgeability and tool life are degraded considerably. The Mn is required to be above the lower limit in order to assure the strength, and above the upper limit, the decreased effect of toughness improvement is resulted and the cold forgeability is degraded. The transformation treatment forms fine sorbite or mixed structure of this and bainite, and improves elongation and drawing. The drawing is required to improve the tensile strength to about ≥70kg/mm2 and if the reduction of area is in excess of 40%, the toughness is degraded.
