Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare lactic acid widely used as a food additive, etc. in high yield, by the four steps of hydrolyzing lactonitrile as a raw material, neutralizing the remaining free mineral acid, converting the polymerized lactic acid into the monomer with water, and isolating the lactic acid by the vacuum distillation.
CONSTITUTION: An inexpensively available lactonitrile as a starting raw material is hydrolyzed with a mineral acid and water in the first step, and the free mineral acid and hydrogen salt remaining in the resultant reaction solution are neutralized in the second step. The resultant polymerized lactic acid formed as a by-product is then converted into the monomer with water in the third step, and the reaction solution containing the monomeric lactic acid is then distilled under reduced pressure to isolate the lactic acid in the fourth step.
EFFECT: The resultant lactic acid is colorless without causing the decomposition in heating and easily converting into the polymerized lactic acid, and the offensive smell can be removed by the treatment with active carbon.
