Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical mode energizing distribution accurately and efficiently, by distributing single-mode fibers opposite to each other at a part of an optical fiber where the propagation modes are successively turned off. CONSTITUTION:As illustrated, single-mode fibers 7-1-7-n are distributed at the taper part of an optical fiber 1. If n1 and n2 are refferred to as the refractive indexes of the core and the cladding respectively with thetac meaning the critical angle (=cos<-1>n2/n2), the full angle of reflection thetan satisfies thetan<=thetac at the boundary between the core and the cladding for each mode An which propagates within the fiber 1. Then the radiation mode starts at an angle that satisfies thetan>thetac, i.e. thetan=thetai to be made incident to the single-mode fiber. Here theta1 is equivalent to the incident refractive angle when the energizing is carried out from each single-mode fiber into the fiber 1.
