Abstract

PURPOSE:To make possible the through maintenance of the plane of polarization against external disturbances and make manufacture easy by providing prescribed rate of ellipse to a core or clad and containing a prescribed amount of boron trioxide in the clad. CONSTITUTION:This optical fiber has a core 1 consisting essentially of silicon dioxide and a clad 2 consisting essentially of silicon dioxide having a refractive index lower than that of the core 1 wherein the rate of ellipse of at least one of the core 1 and the clad 2 is made >=1.0%, and boron trioxide of >=20mol% is contained in the clad 2. Further, the diameter of the core 1 is set at >=4.5lambda and the coupling length L at <=2mm. with respect to the wavelegnth lambda of light.
