Abstract
PURPOSE:To ensure a selective display for an optional character with extremely high contrast through a comparatively simple structure, by combining plural twist nematic liquid crystal cells and plural character polarizing plates and then driving the liquid crystal cell in a specified way. CONSTITUTION:A light source 100, a polarizing plate 200, a liquid crystal (nematic mode of twist angle 90 deg.) 300, a character polarizing plate 400 of figure ''4'', a liquid crystal 500- a character polarizing plate 1,000 of figure ''10'', etc. are distributed in that order from an end side (e.g. left side). (The polarizing axis of each polarizing plate and the polarizing axis of the light which can pass through each liquid crystal cell when the electric conduction is given to each cell are vertical, and the mark 1,100 indicates an observer.) For a device having above-mentioned structure, no electric conduction is applied to liquid crystals 300 and 500, and the electric conduction is applied to liquid crystal cells 600, 800 and 900 respectively for instance. As a result, only the figure ''4'' on the plate 400 is displayed. (An arrow mark shows the vibrating direction of the incident light of each character polarizing plate.)
