Abstract

PURPOSE:To absorb the light entered to a liquid crystal display device at a prescribed angle or above from the front of the device by a louver which is made into the slit or polygonal shape having an arbitrary angle in the direction perpendicular to the device and allows the passage of the light only in a specified visual angle range and to improve the contrast ratio of the device by disposing the above-mentioned louver to at least either of a pair of polarizing plates of the liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:An optically anisotropic body 2 is adhered by an adhesive agent to one side of the supertwisted nematic liquid crystal cell 4 of the liquid crystal display device and the louver 5 is adhered by an adhesive agent 3 to the polarizing plate 1 in the opposite direction. A light source 6 consisting of a photoconductive plate, etc., is disposed on the louver 5 side. This louver 5 is made into a grid shape and the grids thereof are formed to a spacing (d) and thickness (h) to allow the passage of the light emitted from the light source 6 through the louver 5. The visual angle is thereby made into a + or -20 deg. range from the front and the contrast ratio of the display device is improved.
