Abstract

PURPOSE: To offer a high-hardness shank material, useful for a high-speed steel tool, having an excellent compression resistance regardless low amounts of alloying elements by letting Fe contain controlled amount of C, Si, Mn, Cr, Mo, V, etc.
CONSTITUTION: The shank material consists of 0.50W0.75wt% C, up to 1.5% Si, up to 1.0% Mn, 3.0W5.0% Cr, 3.5W1.0% Mo, 0.15W1.5% V and the balance being Fe and small amounts of impurities. The shank material optionally contains one or more of 0.2W1.5% Ni, 0.01W0.3% Al and 0.01W0.3% Nb. Owing to the said steel composition a shank material less expensive than conventional SKD61, stable even when treated in company with a high-speed steel used as an edge or the like at once, having a hardness higher than HRC55 at least and suitable for use under a high stress can be obtained.
