Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the contrast of a Grandjean type phase shift liquid crystal display element, by arranging guest-host type liquid crystal in a specific direction. CONSTITUTION:In a phase shift guest-host type liquid crystal display element (of Grandjean type) having a lateral orientation interface, liquid crystal molecules 3 sandwiched between orientation films 2a dnd 2b provided on the counter surfaces of upper and lower cell substrates 1a and 1b have an orientation direction slightly slanting from the vertical direction at the center part, but the direction is determined by liquid crystal orientation directions on the orientation films 2a and 2b; when the direction of view coincides with the slanting direction of liquid-crystal molecules at the said center part, the best contrast is obrained. For this purpose, the orientation directions of the orientation films 2a and 2b are set in parallel to the view direction having the highest frequency and in the opposite direction, improving the contrast of the element.
