Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a brass alloy remarkably superior to a conventional brass alloy in wear resistance and consisting of a prescribed percentage each of Cu, Bi, P and graphite, and the balance Zn.
CONSTITUTION: This brass alloy consists of, by wt., 60.0W88.0% Cu, 0.1W20.0% Bi, 0.1W2.0% Ti, 0.1W1.0% P, 1.0W10.0% graphite, and the balance Zn. To the alloy may be added 0.5W2.0% Sn or further added 0.5W2.0% ≥2 kinds among Cr, Si, Ce and La. By dispersing graphite as a solid-lubricant in a brass alloy which is the most inexpensive Cu alloy having superior castability and machinability, the wear resistance is enhanced remarkably. A synergistic effect on lubrication is produced by the coexistence of Bi and graphite, and the addition of Sn prevents stress corrosion cracking. The addition of Cr, Si, Ce, La, etc. toughens the brass alloy remarkably.
