Abstract
PURPOSE:To arrange liquid crystal molecules homogeneously and obtain a display element for color switching by sealing a liquid crystal in a cell then heating the cell up to the temp. at which the liquid crystal phase turns to a liquid phase, then allowing the same to cool and applying an electric field parallel with the substrates in the process that it returns to the liquid crystal phase. CONSTITUTION:Insulating films 2, 2 are formed of silica or the like on two sheets of glass substrates 1, 1, and further Al is vacuum-evaporated to form conductive thin films 3, 3. The substrates 1, 1 are joined by means of an adhesive agent 4, and a positive dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal 6 is sealed. Next, while AC voltage is applied at 3kV effective voltage between the electrodes 3, 3 in parallel with the substrates 1, the cell is heated up to the temp. at which the liquid crystal phase turns to a liquid phase, after which the heating is ceased and the cell is allowed to cool. The applied voltage is switched off upon confirmation that the liquid phase has returned to the liquid crystal phase. In this way, the homogeneous arrangement is formed. If once formed, the orientation is stable. Polarizing plates are mounted to this cell and the cell is utilized as a photoswitching element by the rotation of the polarizing plates or the cell.
