Abstract
PURPOSE:To form a uniform orientation layer on the whole surface of a base plate to improve the yield by measuring the surface temperature of an electrode plate without contact just after rubbing to use the temperature as an indication for the rubbing. CONSTITUTION:For example, rubbing cloth 2 is wound around a rubbing roller 1 and reciprocating rubbing is repeated so as to apply subscribed pressure to a base plate 4 to be rubbed. Just after the completion of rubbing, the temperature rise of the rubbing surface of the base plate 4 is measured by an infrared ray detector 6. Since the temperature rise is changed according to the various conditions such as the kind of rubbing cloth 2, depressed pressure and rubbing speed atmosphere, the temperature rise of the base plate in the rubbing process can be controlled successively and rubbing troubles can be detected quickly by investigating the rubbing conditions and orientation conditions for temperature rise and liquid crystal previously. Since the abrasion resistance in the polluted part of the base plate 4 is increased and the temperature of the part becomes higher than other parts, troubles can be easily detected. Thus, the quality of the orientation layer can be detected before the assembly of a liquid crystal display unit, improving the yield of products.
