Abstract

An appliance for measuring radioactive contamination of a surface (16) by means of the rubbing method, incorporates a frame (10, 10a) provided with suction cups (14) for fastening it to the surface (16). Mounted on the frame is a mechanism (22, 24, 26, 32, 48, 50, 52) for driving a support (40, 42) carrying an absorbent element (44), so that the element (44) is caused to sweep over the surface in a specific path while being pressed against the surface by means of a spring (36). In the example described the element (44) is caused to rotate about its own axis while being rotated about the axis of a drive shaft (22) displaced therefrom. The appliance makes it possible to carry out contamination measurements with high accuracy and with satisfactory consistency.
