Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an aromatic thiol useful as pharmaceuticals, industrial products, and their raw materials or intermediates, in a short time, in high purity and yield, by reacting an armatic sulfonic acid with triphenylphosphine in the presence of a reducing agent and an organic base.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic thiol is prepared, as shown in the formula A.SO3R→ A.SH (A is aromatic ring residue which may have substituent groups; R is H, alkali metal, or alkyl), by reacting an aromatic sulfonic acid with triphenylphosphine in the presence of (A) a reduction assistant selected from iodine, aromatic disulfide, aromatic diselenide, and carbon tetrachloride, and (B) an organic base selected from trialkylamine and N,N-dialkylaniline, in a solvent such as benzene, toluene, etc., for 20min.
