Abstract

PURPOSE: Acetic anhydride is used as a raw material to effect the reaction with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst of a metal of group VIII and an acidic substance, thus producing vinyl acetate in one stage with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: At least one of metal of group VIII and/or its compound, preferably palladium, rhodium, platinum or ruthenium itself or in the form of Raney metal is used as a catalyst to effect the reaction between acetic anhydric and hydrogen in the presence of an acidic substance such as protonic or Lewis acid at 100W180°C to form vinyl acetate. The amount of the catalyst used in the reaction is preferably in the range from 2.5W10-3 to 10wt%, calculated as group VIII metal, based on the reaction mixture and the amount of the acidic substance is preferably 5×10-1W5wt% based on the reaction mixture.
