Abstract
PURPOSE: In subjecting a phenol having a hydrogen atom in the ortho-position and an alcohol to a contact reaction in a gaseous phase, to obtain the titled compound advantageously, by using a catalyst comprising manganese oxide which has undergone oxidation treatment in the process of the preparation, as a main ingredient.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol shown by the formula (R1WR4 are H, 1W4C hydrocarbon residue, aromatic hydrocarbon residue, e.g., nonsubstituted or substituted phenyl, naphthyl, etc.) having at least one hydrogen atom in the ortho-position and an alcohol are subjected to a contact reaction in a gaseous phase at preferably 330W 440°C in the presence of a catalyst comprising manganese oxide which has undergone oxidation treatment in the process of the preparation, to give an alkylated phenol useful as a raw material for polyphenylene ether. In this method, the oxidation treatment during the preparation of the catalyst makes the oxidative state of manganese uniform and stable, and improves the catalyst activity and selectivity for the ortho-position.
