Abstract
PURPOSE:To dissolve or decrease a irreversible electrode hysteresis which is caused by an electrochemical reaction, and elevate a display efficiency, and to obtain a stable and high grade display, by providing a short-circuit means for setting a pair of electrodes to the same potential, during a non-display period. CONSTITUTION:In a display which is provided with at least a pair of electrodes, one of which is a display electrode 3, and the other is an opposed electrode 4, having an EC substance 2 between then and repeasts coloring and decoloring by an EC substance on said one electrode surface 3, a short-circuit means for setting said pair of electrodes to the same potential during a non-display period after decoloring is provided. In a short-circuited state, from the electrochemical viewpoint, the residual potential by variable density polarization, which has been generated in the immediately previous decoloring process is neutralized, and as a result, a reverse reaction process by which various electrode reaction remainder materials flow out from on the electrode is caused. The figure shows an ECD driving circuit for selectively switching a write driving electric power source and an erase driving electric power source.
