Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the time-division driving of the display body easier by making the polarizing capacity of the polarizing plate at the back of the liquid crystal display panel electrically controllable. CONSTITUTION:A polarizing plate 406 whose polarization capacity is electrically controllable is changeable to two states, the normal state in which the incident light of all the polarizing surfaces is allowed to pass and the state in which the incident light of only the polarizing surface is allowed to pass, by the electric signal applied to row by row (406-1, 406-2, etc.). The polarized light having passed through the polarizing plate 405 varies in the plane of polarization of the light arriving at the polarizing plate 406 depending upon whether an electric field is being applied between the column electrodes 402-1, 402-2, etc. and common electrode 401. Hence, the time-division driving display of liquid crystals may be accomplished by performing row selection subsequently by the electric signals so that the polarizing plate 406 has polarizing capacity and suitably applying voltage to the column electrodes. Here, the abovementioned polarizing plate of the cntrollable polarizing capacity may be constituted by the guest-host type liquid crystal cell (consisting of row electrodes 506-1, 506-2, common electrode 507, liquid crystal 508, etc.).
