Abstract

1523162 Matrix display DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 27 Jan 1976 [11 Feb 1975] 5838/75 Heading G5C To switch rapidly a liquid crystal matrix display, as in Specification 1,502,280, a highblanking. voltage is applied across all areas to make them transparent (ON), subsequently reduced to a lower sustaining level equal to threshold, after which selected areas are allowed to relax to the opaque (OFF) state by a near zero addressing voltage, the sustaning and near zero voltages being obtained from two square waves V 1 , V 2 both of threshold arms value, 45 degrees apart in phase, so that their difference (Fig. 3, not shown) also has the same r.m.s. value. In a cartesian array, typically 12 Ám. thick, containing nematic with, e.g. 10% cholesteric material between transparent, e.g. SnO 2 , electrodes (Fig. 2, not shown), after the end of the blanking voltage V 1 is applied to all Y electrodes Y 1 , Y 2 , Y 3 while zero voltage is applied to all X electrodes X 1 , X 2 , X 3 to provide sustianing voltage across all areas. Then to convert, e.g. one area x 2 , y 2 to the OFF state, V 2 is applied to both X 2 and Y 2 electrodes, the voltages on all other electrodes remaining unchanged, giving threshold r.m.s. level across all areas except those addressed. Other areas may be addressed in sequence, or by line-byline scanning. Polar and seven-segment arrays may be similarly addressed. The liquid crystal material may contain a dye.
