Abstract
PURPOSE:To select not only a high-speed response property but a long lifetime, by forming annularly an electrochromic material having a functional group that performs a coloring and discoloring action on a display electrode. CONSTITUTION:A high molecular EC material having, at the side chain of a macromolecule, a functional group such as the viologen, tetrathiafluvalene, leucodyestuff, thionine, phthalocyanine, porphyrin that performs a coloring and discoloring action by an application of voltage is dissolved in a solvent to form an annular film 7 on a display electrode 2. As a high molecular compound, each derivative of polystyrene, polyacrylic acid, polyacrylic ester, polymethacrylic ester, or polyvinyl ester or the like is used. The electron injected from the side of the electrode 2 migrates through film 7 and then reduces the coloring and discoloring group to perform a coloring action. On the other hand, the salt or a complex such as Fe in an electrolyte solution is oxidized by a counter electrode 3. Thus the deterioration of the coloring and discoloring group can be prevented.
