Abstract
PURPOSE: To facilitate the uniform tempering of the whole sheet glass or the tempering of a part of the glass, by blasting air and water mist separately to a sheet glass heated above the distortion point, and controlling the contact point of the water mist to the sheet glass.
CONSTITUTION: The sheet glass 2 is suspended at the end with a suspending device 1, and heated with a heating furnace at a temperature higher than the distortion point. The heated sheet glass 2 is transferred to the quenching apparatus 3, in which it is quenched and strengthened with cooling medium blasted thereto. The quenching apparatus 3 is furnished with a plurality of air-blasting pipes 4 extended horizontally near the suspended sheet glass 2, and a plurality of water-mist generating nozzles 5 placed at the central region of the sheet glass 2 and between the air-blasting pipes 4. The pipe 4 is provided with a plurality of holes or slits to quench the whole surface of the sheet glass 2 by compressed air supplied from the other end of the pipe. The nozzle 5 is, e.g. an ultrasonic wave generating nozzle which convert water and compressed air to water mist 7 and sprays the mist to the sheet glass 2.
