Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve cooling efficiency and to increase the crushing strength of steel pipe, by cooling the tempered steel pipe by means of a cooling apparatus for the outside of pipe at specific conditions, said cooling apparatus which has a circular header equipped with many spray nozzles for cooling water arranged staggeringly in front and rear rows.
CONSTITUTION: A cooling apparatus equipped with one stage of plural stages of circular headers 1 having many nozzles 2, 3 placed at equal intervals on the circumferences concentric with that of steel pipe 4 and arranged staggeringly in front and rear rows. The steel pipe 4 is cooled while being conveyed in axial direction by spraying water from nozzles 2, 3. The cooling is started at 400W700°C temp. and is performed at ≤2m3/min.m3 mean water quantity density to 350 W ordinary temp., and the interval surface of the steel pipe 4 is cooled at ≤40°C/sec mean cooling rate. The development of residual tensile stress in the circumferential direction of the inner surface of the steel pipe 4 is controlled by changing the water quantity density under said conditions of cooling.
