Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the thickness deviation of the leading and trailing end parts of an extruded pipe and to improve yield by providing nozzles for cooling billet ends and cooling and hardening the end faces than extrusion-molding the billet.
CONSTITUTION: Billet coolers 7, 7' are disposed near both ends of a billet loader 6. Nozzles 10 are put in the positions shown by alternate long and two short dashes lines by actuators 11, and a billet 3 of high temp. is placed on the loader 6. Nozzle supporting pipes 9 are then put in vertical positions, that is, the nozzles 10 are positioned to the center of the billet 3. At the same time, cooling water is ejected from the nozzles 10 to cool and harden the leading and trailing ends of the billet 3. When the leading and trailing ends attain prescribed hardness, the nozzles 10 are again put in the positions of the alternate long and two short dashes lines and the billet is extruded. Thereby, thickness deviation is minimized.
