CONSTITUTION:Primary covering layers 2 and secondary covering layers 3 at the outer circumferences of butt end parts 4 and 4 of optical fibers 1 and 1 are removed to the prescribed length, and the end parts 4 and 4 are butted together to be connected by being melt-stuck. The outer circumference of a connection part 5 including the butted end parts 4 and 4 is coated with silicone rubber, etc., having a low Young's modulus to form an internal covering layer 6 to about 5-50mum thickness, and on the layer 6, an external covering layer 7 having an external diameter equal to that of the layer 3 and a high Young's modulus is formed by transfer molding by using a plastic material compatilbe with the layer 3. In this constitution, the melt- sticking part of the butt end parts 4 and 4 has no small corvature and the deterioration of transmission characteristics is prevented. The layers 7 and 3 are bonded in one body securely, and mutual operation with the layer improves mechanical strength against breaking.
