Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for a medicine, agricultural chemical, etc. in high yield and purity efficiently, by reacting a low chlorinated acetone with chlorine under heating in the presence of a phosphine or its mixture with an organic base as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Acetone is catalytically reacted with chlorine in the vapor phase at 70W100°C, and the formed acetone chlorinated to 1.6W1.8 substituent chlorine atoms on an average is absorbed in an organic solvent to react with excess chlorine. The resultant chlorinated acetone containing 2W2.5 chlorine atoms on an average is then chlorinated with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a phosphine, e.g. tri-n-butylphosphine or diphenylphosphine (except triphenylphosphine), alone or its mixture with an organic base, e.g. an amine such as pyridine or quinoline, under heating at 60W150°C to give hexachloroacetone.
USE: A raw material for preparing trichloroacetic acid and chloroform, a raw material for preparing hexafluoroacetone, etc.
