Abstract

PURPOSE: In chlorinating acetophenone in a liquid phase, to obtain an α-chloroacetophenone in high yield in high purity useful as an intermediate for an agricultural chemical, drug, etc., by using chloroform, methylene chloride, or their mixtures as a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Acetophenone is dissolved in chloroform, methylene chloride, or their mixtures, and chlorinated in a liquid phase, to give α-chloroacetophenone. The reaction temperature is -30W60°C, preferably -20W40°C, the amount of the solvent used is 5W15 times as much as that of acetophenone preferably respectively. The reaction is usually carried out by introducing chlorine gas into a liquid phase, and almost equimolar chlorine based on acetophenone is used. Acetophenone as a raw material is obtained inexpensively as a by-product in the preparation of phenol by cumene process.
