Abstract

PURPOSE: Chlorocarboxylic acid is made to react with acetic anhydride, while removing formed acetic acid, and then the product is treated with HCl under an anhydrous condition to give the high purity title compound, useful as an intermediate of pesticides and pharmaceuticals, in high yield and easily.
CONSTITUTION: In the first process, chlorocarboxylic acid is made to react with acetic anhydride while removing formed acetic acid, to give chlorocaboxylic acid anhydride readily as the main reaction product. In the second process, the product is treated with Cl2 under an anhydrous condition to give high purity chlorocarboxylic acid chloride in high yield. In this invention, the byproduced chlorocarboxylic acid can be recycled and there is extremely small amount of the industrial waste because of no need of addition of the third substance having nothing to do with the reaction. Moreover, this process is convenient in an industrial scale since there is no formation of the poly-chlorinated compounds which can not easily be speparated from chlorocaboxylic acid chloride.
