Abstract
PURPOSE: Xylene is chlorinated with molecular chlorine under irradiation with light to form a chlorination product of a secific product of a specific concentration, then the product is distilled and the distilate is recycled to the reaction system, thereby producing continuously title compound in high selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: Under irradiation with light xylene is chlorinated with molecular chlorine wherein α, α'-dichloroxylene is kept 5W25, preferably 6W18mol% in concentration and tetrachloroxylene and more chlorinated poducts are kept 5mol% or lower in the reaction system. The reaction mixture is distilled and the distillate containing unreacted xylene and α-chloroxylene is recycled to the reaction system and the chlorination is continued. Liberating hydrochloric gas is condensed and removed out of the system.
EFFECT: The formation of by-products such as compounds chlorinated on the uncleus is inhibited without any use of solvent and additive and the objective compound can be produced in high yield.
USE: Synthetic intermediate of esters.
