Abstract

Prodn. of chlorocarboxylic acid chlorides (I) is carried out by (a) reacting a chlorocarboxylic acid (II) with acetic anhydride to form a product contg. the corresp. chlorocarboxylic acid anhydride (III), and simultaneously removing by-produced acetic acid from the product, and (b) reacting the product with HCl in the absence of H2O and isolating (I) from the reaction mixt. Cpds. (I), e.g. monochloroacetyl chloride (Ia) and alpha - monochloropropionyl chloride (Ib), are useful as intermediates for agricultural chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The process gives high-yields (93-96%) of (I) with high purity (>=99%).
