Abstract

PURPOSE: Acetylene is blown into a solution of methylmagnesium chloride to produce the titled compound of high purity inexpensively in high yield, which is used as a synthetic intermediate of medicines, agricultural chemicals and perfumes.
CONSTITUTION: An acetylene gas is blown into a solution of methylmagnesium chloride of formula I to effect direct reaction, thus producing ethynylmagnesium chloride of formula II in almost quantitative yield. The reaction temperature is -30W30°C, preferably 0W10°C and the amount of the acetylene is 1.1W1.5 times the molar quantity of the compound of formula I. The solvent is diethyl ether. The resultant compound of formula II is used as a synthetic intermediate of steroids, pheromons and vitamin A.
