Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals, without using the post-treatment of the catalyst or distillation operation, etc., by reacting isovaleric acid with bromine in the presence of an isovaleryl halide, etc. to effect the αbromination, and further reacting with thionyl chloride and urea.
CONSTITUTION: Isovaleric acid is α-brominated with Br in the presence of an isovaleryl halide of α-bromoisovaleryl halide (e.g. isovaleryl chloride, isovaleryl bromide, etc.). The product is made to react with thionyl chloride to obtain α- bromoisovaleryl chloride, and the produced reaction liquid is reacted with urea in the presence of a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent to afford the objective compound. The use of isovaleryl halide, etc. eliminates the problems of post-treatment which are inherent to the phosphorus catalyst. Since the α-bromoisovaleryl halide is an intemediate reaction product of the above process, its purification is not necessary, and the process is economical.
