Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a uniform, good-quality polysaccharide glycolic acid salt efficiently and easily, by adding a solid caustic alkali to a mixture of a polysaccharide and monochloroacetic acid, keeping the water content of the mixture at below a specified level, adding an organic solvent to the mixture and reacting the resulting mixture.

CONSTITUTION: The reaction is carried out as follows. A solid caustic alkali is added to a mixture of a polysaccharide or a derivative thereof and monochloroacetic acid or a salt thereof at an initial stage of the reaction. The water content of the mixture is kept at a level such that 100pts.wt. polysaccharide or a derivative thereof contains 20pts.wt. or less water including the water contained in the polysaccharide. 5W40pts.wt. organic solvent is added to the mixture. In this reaction, water is necessary but is not necessarily added at the initial stage of the reaction, because the material polysaccharide always contains several % water. When the water content exceeds 20wt%, the polysaccharide becomes susceptible to local pasting by the action of the caustic alkali. In order to avoid this, the water content at the initial stage of the reaction should be kept below 20wt%.
