Abstract

PURPOSE: To simply obtain electrolytic manganese dioxide with superior characteristics for a dry battery by suspending manganese oxide in a manganese sulfate soln., dipping electrolytic manganese dioxide deposited by electrolysis in dil. sulfuric acid, and neutralizing the acid.
CONSTITUTION: A manganese sulfate soln. is poured in an electrolytic cell and used as an electrolytic soln. After suspending a slurry of manganese oxide having ≤about 50μm size in the soln., electrolysis is carried out. Electrolytic manganese dioxide deposited on an electrode plate is peeled off, coarsely crushed, further crushed to ≤about 10mm, and dipped in a dil. sulfuric acid soln. to remove lower oxide. Sulfuric acid on the acid treated manganese dioxide is then neutralized with an alkali soln. such as an Na2CO3 soln., and product electrolytic manganese dioxide is obtd. through washing and drying processes.
