The sheet 1 is fed from the tail-end 8 side as shown by an arrow 5 and when the tail end 8 is detected by one sensor right before a sensor 9, a photoelectric conversion part 9 is informed of the detection from a control circuit part 12. The photoelectric conversion part 9 converts a signal from the sensor 4 into a binary signal to fetch a read character pattern according to position information supplied from the control circuit part 12. At this time, the opposite direction read has been specified by the control circuit part 12, so the read character pattern is inputted to a pattern inversion part 10.
