CONSTITUTION:A sensor output of column detecting mechanism constituted with a light source 31 and a sensor 32 is made to be a pitch of lines 2-1-2-10, and the outputs of respective lines 2-1-2-10 are made to be wave forms SA1-SA10. After this waveforms SA1-SA10 are shaped to a waveform by a waveform shaping device 33, they are supplied to a mark discriminator 34, respectively. Further, when a mark and a space are discrminated, a discriminating level SL of the waveform is set in every timing, and the mark and the space are judged by equidistant samplings SP. The discrimination between stain plus dirt, etc. stuck on a medium and a mark with reduced printing density is facilitated.
