PURPOSE:To provide a detector which enables the checking of the length of a paper for printing data and the detection of information necessary for controlling possible staggering thereof by detecting a toner mark and a sprocket hole for detecting printing density simultaneously with a printing density detector. CONSTITUTION:A toner mark 8, a sprocket hole 9 and a printing density detector 5 are arranged on the same center line. The printing density of the toner mark 8 is detected as a function of a peak value from the output waveform of the detector 5 to check the length of a printing paper 4. This also enables the checking for the running condition of the paper 4 by determining whether the signal of the sprocket hole 9 is generated at each cycle as specified.
