PURPOSE:To read characters equivalently to character recognition in the magnetic ink character reader with a simple circuit constitution, by reading magnetic ink characters optically to detect magnetism in character informtion. CONSTITUTION:When carrying of the form on the hopper is started by form feed mechanism 1, the character information group printed in the ink including magnetic substances is magnetized by magnetizing head 2 before it is fed to the read area. This character information group has characters recognized by the optical system and recognizing part 5, and magnetism of characters is detected by magnetism detecting head 3 after the completion of character recognition, and magnetism detecting circuit 4 generates the output.
