Abstract

PURPOSE:To give a margin to the size of a document which can be read, by processing the readout contents of a memory by longitudinal and lateral conversion, and then storing the conversion results in a line buffer. CONSTITUTION:A small-sized document is conveyed while turned sideways. Character patterns on the document are converted by a photoelectric conversion part 11 into photoelectric conversion signals VD, which are written in a memory 12. After the writing operation, a control circuit 13 reads the contents of the memory 12 on the basis of previously given field data on the document. A read photoelectric conversion signal VD1 is written in as line buffer 15 after longitudinal-lateral conversion. Photoelectrically converted character patterns for one line written in the buffer 15 are segmented into one-character patterns by a recognition part 18, thus performing recognition.
