Abstract

PURPOSE: To lower pH of alkaline waste waters with an easy operation and an inexpensive treatment cost, by contacting alkaline waste water with fine sand composed of silicate minerals.
CONSTITUTION: Sand composed mainly of silicate minerals, such as sea sand, river sand, mountain sand, etc., is used as the fine sand to be used for this process. When this sand is charged into a filter tank and an alkaline water is supplied from the top, a treated water is obtained from the bottom. In this way, alkaline waste water is contacted with fine sand composed of silicate minerals, and, therefore, the operation is simple and the treatment cost is inexpensive because no special facilities and medicines are required. Moreover, since the fine sand used for this treatment can be used as an aggregate of concrete, no harmful substances will be discharged outside.
