Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sintered iron material of high precision capable of increasing the dimensional change rate in sintering without changing the mechanical characteristics of the sintered product by adding a little lead powder to powdered starting material after which they are molded and sintered.
CONSTITUTION: The SMF No. 5-1 material (Standard of Japan Metallurgical Industrial Society) consisting of 1.5% Cu, 2.7% Ni, 0.7% C, 0W3% Pb and the balance Fe is prepared as powdered starting material for a sintered iron material. To the starting material is added 0.005W0.5% Pb, and a sintered iron material is manufactured by an ordinary powder metallurgical method. By adding a little Pb, the dimensional change rate in sintering is shifted to the expansion side, and the change extent has linear relation to the logarithms of the Pb content. The hardness of the sintered material as a standard of mechanical properties is hardly changed in case of ≤0.5% Pb content, and the dimensional change rate in sintering can be shifted to the expansion side by maximum 0.5% as compared to a material contg. no. Pb.
