Abstract
PURPOSE: To eliminate the pumping loss of an engine and improve its combustion efficiency at reduction opration of cylinder quantity in the multicylinder engine, by providing a controller inoperatovely actuating the open-close device of intake and exhaust valves in as off-operative cylinder and holding said intake and exhaust valves in a closed state.
CONSTITUTION: An intake valve (also similar for exhaust valve) 3 provided in a cylinder 1 to be off-operated at cylinder quantity reduction operation of an engine is constituted to provide its opening operation through a bell crank 5, push rod 6 and rocker arm 7 by the action of rotation of a cam 4. Then the bell crank 5 is axially supported to an eccentric shaft 8 and set to a state, as shown in a view A, at normally firing combustion where the bell crank is actuated by the cam 4 at a turning position of the eccentric shaft 8. While for combustion of the cylinder at rest, the bell crank is not actuated by the cam at another turning position of the eccentric shaft 8 in an inoperative state as shown in a view B. Here the intake valve 3 holds its closing position with force of a spring to quite eliminate a pumping loss with the closing of an exhaust valve.
